Working with the Five Elements of Feng Shui

Feng Shui for Digestion ~Romancing the Food

by BJ Gorman, MTIA

Earth is physical. It’s Ch’i qualities are fertility, practicality, stability, sensuality, staying grounded & organized on all levels, aliveness, connected.  It is found in brick, stucco, ceramics, earthenware, opaque finishes like faux finishes, and in earth-tones such as yellow and beige.  Earth is associated with the sectors of Love and Relationship and the Center of the Bagua Map.  Good health is balanced and centered.  The earth element allows us to ground ourselves and be in the present and open to the goodness of life.

Mealtime is the time to nurture ourselves emotionally and physically. To properly assimilate and digest your food, settle into the moment of the meal.  Eating on the run challenges our digestion.  Eating in a loud busy atmosphere keeps our stomach from relaxing to receive the nourishment of our food.  Eating is an earthbound “Yin” activity - feminine, soft, quiet, silent, and slow.  An upset stomach tells us to slow down and be present.  Is your dining area a quiet place?  To create a nurturing mood in your eating space cover the table with a tablecloth, place mats, add candles, and flowers on the table, soothing pictures on the wall, cushions on the chairs, and some soft music.  Setting aside the time and creating the quiet space to dine allows us to connect with our body and with those around us.  As you open to the goodness of life you ground and center. It can be helpful to your health too.  Turn off the TV to turn on healthy assimilation and bring some romance into life.
